Last days in Morocco

30 maart 2022 - Marrakech, Marokko

On Monday we booked a full day with a driver to go to the desert and the Atlas Mountains. What a special day! We left from our hotel at 9.00 in the morning to drive in the directions of the Agafay Desert. Our driver is great and tells us many stories along the way. Officially he is not a tour guide so he is not allowed to tell us anything outside of the car (he could go to prison for that!), but inside he talks about the environment, his personal experience, and his family. We make some stops to take pictures and have tea next to a big lake and dam where they have their water reserves for the summer. At the moment there is still a lot of snow in the mountains, so there is not so much water in the lake yet, but when this melts the water level will come a lot higher.

After tea it is time to visit a local market or souk in a small town nearby. The chaos is complete. Cars everywhere, people everywhere. We get out of the car and discuss a meeting point with the driver. We take a walk over the Souks, but it is warm and the kids find it a bit scary. There are animals, dead and alive, everywhere. A lot of people that want to sell us something and so much noise! But it is a fantastic experience. We drive further in the directions of the mountains to go for a hike to the waterfalls. When we reach the waterfalls, we choose to walk up before we go for lunch and our guide is already waiting for us. A super friendly guy that has 5 kids himself and understands how they need to be motivated to climb uphill. He carries Zoe where needed so we can totally focus on our own feet as it is quite a steep path. The view and the falls are beautiful and when we take a different route back to the village, we also see monkeys on the rocks. We have lunch next to the river where our driver is also waiting for us. In the meantime it is already 16.00 and the kids are super tired so we take the short route back to Marrakesh where we arrive around 17.30 in the hotel. Luckily the kids slept in the car so after a bath they can stay awake for dinner in the restaurant to speak a bit more about this fantastic experience.

After the full day from Monday, we could use a bit of relaxing, so we stayed at the hotel. The weather is really nice in the morning so after the Kidsclub it is time for a swim. After lunch there is a lot of wind, so we play some games, enjoy a Tajin Chicken cooking class and have some food in the late afternoon at the pool. Robert is meeting in the evening for dinner with Smail Ghouzraf from Round Table Marrakech to get the local experience!

Today we went to the city again after breakfast, some homework and time at the Kidsclub. We visited the Bahia Palace, very beautiful. It is a rainy morning, but luckily it is a getting a bit better when we go for lunch on a small square near the palace. The tajine we made yesterday during the cooking workshop was super nice, so Dax is enthusiastic straight away when it is on the menu. Also here it is super delicious. The waiters are dancing with Zoe, so all in all we had a great lunch. We walk through the city to the Place d’Epice and have a coffee at the Café d’Epice what had a super nice rooftop. We take the shuttle back to the hotel (great service by the way, you need to book it upfront, but you can take one every hour). We relax a bit and eat an ice cream before we go to our last dinner as we fly back to Spain tomorrow. It has been an incredible experience for the kids and for us. Great country, super friendly people, fantastic hotel, a super special week in our trip that we will definitely remember!

Liefs Jaan
